Clifton Park is a beautiful collection of suburban neighborhoods just 15 minutes north of Albany, 20 minutes south of Saratoga & only seven miles northeast of Schenectady. It borders the Mohawk River on the south and runs almost 10 miles north along the Northway. It is found in the southern portion of the larger Saratoga County
Whether you are in Crescent/Vischer Ferry area off Exit 8 or north off Ushers Road by Exit 10 of the Northway, you will find a mix of new and older suburban neighborhoods that are typically well-kept and maintained. There is a certain level of pride among Clifton Park residents in keeping a nice image. The area has grown so much over the past 15 years, with the new retail stores in Clifton Park Center, the new office complexes on Route 146 or even the planned church buildings and other commercial businesses intending to open up in 2017 and 2018.
Clifton Park has become the place that many people in the Capital Region flock to. Home prices are going up because of that demand. Currently, with nearly 40,000 people living in the area, that number is likely to continue to increase.
We have always loved the Shen School campus, with the high school track and tennis courts. Interestingly, the Shenendehowa Central School District is one of the largest in the Capital Region with nearly 10,000 students across more than a dozen school buildings. The district is a great place to have your kids go to school.
If you have kids, you will love Clifton Commons as there are numerous soccer fields and the wooden play park where everyone has a good time. A fun fact in the summer: with the Clifton Park Ice Arena right in the same parking lot, kids love to play with the ice shavings that are dumped from the zamboni. Playing with ice & snow in the summer has always been a favorite of our kids as well as neighboring families.
Even though the area has continued to grow at an accelerating pace, there are still many great nostalgic places people can frequent. The old Jonesville Store with a great selection of food and condiments is a special treat. Or, Lindsey's Country Store on Route 9 just south of Walmart in Halfmoon. In our opinion, the BEST cider doughnuts in all of the Capital Region.
If you have a family, there is much to do: Kinns Road Park off Ushers Road is a hidden gem. A great place to take the kids and the dog, as long as on a leash. What many do not know is there is a great stream flowing at the southern part of the park, especially in the Spring & early Summer months. Indian Kill on the west tip is also a great spot with amazing hiking trails and beautiful oak and hemlock trees lining each path. Vischer Ferry houses the old Erie Canal and trail system. A beautiful area to go hiking along the Mohawk River for sure.
There are a number of great farms worthy of checking out: Riverview Orchard is a favorite with many great jams & jellies to sample, along with fresh locally-sourced honey and apple cider. We are partial with kids as they have a petting zoo area as well as a great apple orchard to hike through and pick apples in the Fall.
If you are an ice cream fan, it doesn't get any better than Country Drive-in off Exit 8. They do so much ice cream and burger business in the warmer months that they close down in the winter & only sell Christmas trees.
The Llenroc Mansion is not too far down the road, the largest private residence, we believe, in the Capital Region. It was named after Cornell University, where the original owner and builder attended school. A beautiful property on the cliffs along the Mohawk River.
As for growth and development, we have seen a continuous uptick in the area. New developments are even being built right now east behind Route 9 in Halfmoon. It truly is an area for young families to raise their kids. Clifton Park is notoriously a safe place to live and spend time with friends and family.
If you are a dog lover, you can do no better than Mary Jane Row Dog Park or Kinns Road Park. Acres of woods and trails will keep you & your pet in tip-top shape.
The following communities in Clifton Park include Elnora, Grooms Corners, Ballston Lake, Flagler Corners, Alplaus, Round Lake, Rexford, Ushers and Vischer Ferry. These great places truly add a small-town charm to an area that is truly growing.
Back on the east side of town, the Sportsplex of Halfmoon is a bustling spot. It is where all sorts of soccer, lacrosse, flag football, field hockey and other events take place in Clifton Park area. Not to mention the many conventions and events held when games are not in session. The Clifton Park Soccer Club has tournaments and programs on a regular basis. In a nutshell, Clifton Park has a rich history known as a sports-oriented town for the schools in the area.
The beauty of the area is that it is only 15-20 minutes north of downtown Albany and 20 minutes from downtown Saratoga Springs. It is conveniently located to reach anything that is going on in the Capital Region with a commitment to a short drive.
The bottom line: we have been blessed to live in Clifton Park for almost 20 years and have seen much change and growth, all for the better. It is a safe place to live and offers alot of variety and things to do. Location is vital and home prices, while rising, still provide great value. Of all the areas on the Capital Region, we can honestly recommend this is the number one spot to consider. There is so much upside to the area versus others in the region. Come check out Clifton Park and find out for yourself why it is a great place to call home!
